Nisanyan House

When visiting Turkey, seeing the well-preserved ruins of Ephesus is a must. So it was there we began our 12-day journey through through the historically rich and culturally lovely country.

Ephesus

Our driver picked us up at the Izmir airport and drove us up the windy road to the small property in the tiny town of Sirince. There are hotels closer to Ephesus, but staying at the Nisanyan House was magical. As you can probably tell from my absence of wrinkles, it’s been a few years since we stayed there; still, it holds a special place in my heart.

Amazing Turkish meal in the main house restaurant.

We enjoyed an amazing meal our first night, went to bed early in our detached vinyard house and woke the next morning feeling disoriented by a strange honking sound. Turns out, the sound was from the donkeys wandering the hills. It was surreal!

Like many of my favorites properties, Nisanyan is not fancy; rather it’s quaint and authentic. One of the best parts was the full Turkish breakfast served every morning looking over the nearby hills.

Tour buses appear during the day to experience the well-preserved architecture of the town, but in the mornings and evenings, it’s just locals and guests of the few properties in town.

Village of Sirince, Turkey.

We visited in May and loved the property so much that we ducked out from our all-day tour (why I love private local guides) to enjoy the beautiful pool all by ourselves.

Marble in-ground pool overlooking valley.

When we returned to Ephesus with the kids a few years later, we were there just one day on a cruise. We were so happy to see that our memories were accurate; Sirince was still the special place we remembered. I hope when the kids are grown, I’ll find my way back to this heaven on earth, with my thoughts and a few good books.

Dreaming of a return to Nisanyan House.
